The acquisition of machine parts is crucial to industrialization, as they are needed to build factories.ĭiplomacy is managed bilaterally nations can engage in diplomacy using a variable yearly supply of diplomats, offering various treaties and entreaties to other states. The game focuses on industrialization in a country, which is driven by technological research. Victoria has 47 separate resources, produced by collection or production (or in one case both). Access to the world market is granted based on a country's prestige rating. They can also be acquired on the world market. All resources can be collected or produced by industry. The player possesses a wide range of options with which to build their economy, provided they have access to the proper raw materials. Other materials, such as timber, are consumed mostly by industry - but can nonetheless be sold directly for less profit. Some resources, such as wheat, are demanded principally by POPs (population units), and can be sold directly. Every province in the game produces a resource. The economic system in Victoria attempts to simulate the flow of resources in a world market. A sequel, Victoria II, was released in August 2010, and another sequel, Victoria 3, was released in October 2022. Critics cited reasons such as the game's steep learning curve and its relatively dated graphics. However, Victoria received largely indifferent reviews on release, averaging only 60.4% on GameRankings. Fans of Paradox's games have noted this one for being the deepest game Paradox had yet made, making it quite popular with the Paradox fanbase. The game itself gives a lot of importance to the economy of a country, having a complex market system which is described as being one of the best economic simulators ever made. Unlike previous Paradox Games, which either focused on diplomacy or war, Victoria focuses on internal management, covering the industrialization and social/political changes in a country. It was later ported to Macintosh by Virtual Programming. The game runs on a modified version of the Europa Engine, and the lead game programmer was Johan Andersson. It covers primarily its namesake the Victorian period (1837–1901) and beyond, specifically 1836–1920 for the main game, and extends until 1936 if the expansion is installed. Victoria: An Empire Under the Sun is a grand strategy videogame by Paradox Entertainment (now known as Paradox Interactive), released in 2003. In terms of how my average solution time for each day varied around its average, there was a distinct shift on Wednesday. ((Even NYT crossword constructor Merl Reagle’s on-camera best for a Monday puzzle was just over two minutes in Wordplay.)) Instead, I averaged 7:15 on Mondays, 10:02 on Tuesdays, 16:58 on Wednesdays, 28:26 on Thursdays, 42:11 on Fridays, and 59:59 on Saturdays. If a linear difficulty trend prevailed, I would have finished Mondays in an average time of 56 seconds, Tuesdays in 11:33, Wednesdays in 22:10, Thursdays in 32:47, Fridays in 43:23, and Saturdays in 54:01. In fact, given the R 2 of 99.5%, I’m confident in saying that the impact of day on solution time - at least based on my brain in 2007 - is exponential. Shortz doesn’t explicitly make a claim that there’s a linear progression of difficulty from Monday to Saturday (e.g., Tuesday puzzles are 2x as difficult as Monday puzzles, Wednesdays are 3x as difficult as Mondays, Thursdays are 4x as difficult as Mondays, and so on), so it seems worthy - or at least a bit of fun - to test the question, “Based on my solution times in 2007, is NYT crossword difficulty linear?” This is why, as editor, I vary the weekday Times crossword difficulty from easy-medium on Monday up to what the actor and puzzle aficionado Paul Sorvino calls “the bitch mother of all crosswords” on Saturday. The perfect level of difficulty, of course, differs from person to person. ((Everyone assumed someone else was getting me the 2014 calendar, and, as I detailed on this week’s Three Cone Drill Podcast, I wasn’t in a mood to give many shits about gifting failures in 2014.)) Methinks I should do some statistical analyses and publish it as a part of Random Rounding! What follows are a couple of interesting observations I made based on my overall results in 2007. So, I’m sitting on daily crossword data from 2007 to 2013, and I have my own site now. Amazingly, I’ve kept all of these results to this day. Since then, my morning routine has consisted of making breakfast, brewing coffee, and timing how long it takes me to solve the next crossword challenge that the calendar has to offer. ((Incidentally, the speed-accuracy trade-off is a big deal in sport psychology research, which I’ll be writing about on Wisdom Wednesday.)) Inspired, I got my first NYT crossword calendar in 2007. Ostensibly, Wordplay‘s main character is longtime NYT crossword editor Will Shortz, but the real star of the movie - its emotional compass, if you will - is the American Crossword Puzzle Tournament, where entrants try to solve crosswords as quickly and accurately as they can. So, when I saw Worplay, I immediately thought, “People actually compete at this? For money?” Given my aforementioned puzzle-solving proclivity as a child, it should come as no surprise that I frequently daydreamed about winning a ton of money on Wheel of Fortune, The Price is Right, $25,000 Pyramid (R.I.P.), Classic Concentration (R.I.P.), and Scrabble (R.I.P.), the last of which was a Chuck Woolery-hosted show that, although based on a vocabulary game, was actually a crossword game. When I was a kid, my dad used to take me on his weekend journeys to the brick-and-mortar newsstands around Miami, and my reward for a six-hour date with paper was a haul of various puzzle books that ran the gamut of nerddom: invisible ink quizzes, logic problems, brain teasers, word searches, mazes…and crosswords.įast forwarding from 1986 to 2006, one day I happened upon the movie Wordplay, a documentary about, in part, the world of competitive crosswording. (Apparently, drinking and wordplay are my base desires.)Īlcohol aside, I’ve always been a big fan of puzzles. Really, there are only three things that I make sure someone gets me each December: A bottle of Bombay Sapphire gin, a bottle of 18-year old Jameson Irish Whiskey and the upcoming year’s New York Times ( NYT) Crossword Calendar. In front of each clue we have added its number and position on the crossword puzzle for easier navigation. As a Christmas giftee, I’m no enigma. So we need an additional package manager taking care of our packages. You can download additional software using the apple store (or what ever it's called today) but the packages here are not enough and it will soon become cumbersome to install all the packages we need without someone making sure the versions work together. As an example the bash version installed in MacOs is from 2007, so it's kind of old. The problem for us is that the programs shipped are far from enough and that some of them are old to say the least. Read them and execute the following command in a terminal window sudo xcodebuild -license Install extra package managerĪpple ships MacOS with a couple of useful programs, such as bash. Note: after installation you need to accept the license terms. Install required packages XCode Installation Some course may require you to install additional software. Once you have these installed you can use our download script (see Software used) to prepare your computer for using our material. Both of them require that xcode is installed. You can get around this by installing either Homebrew or The MacPorts Project. MacOS is missing a couple of programs we're using in our courses/books. 1.2.3.6 Using the bash from MacPorts - automatically.1.2.3.5 Using the bash from MacPorts - manually.

You miss out on characters, but you keep your 500 bucks while others lose 500 bucks. If you play free to play only (which is the only logical way.it's a fucking phone game for fuck sake) you can't expect to get every 6* you want, and yes you can get jealous over "those rich kids" with their thousand dollars worth of pulls, but then you ask yourself who exactly is gaining and losing what? Is 1,000$ (or more) REALLY worth it to you just to have tiny pixels of noctis, lunneth, and lightning on your phone that you tap and they do some shitty animation? yeah BE is great, yeah it's fun, that's why I play it.but use your common sense. Maybe just 50 bucks, maybe just 10,000$ but something was spent. What it comes down to is a mass amount of people (and make no mistake it will happen with Noctis) that get EVERY single whalebeast 6* put down some amount of real $ to cash in pulls like crazy. Not to say it hasn't happened (it has) but it's a VERY low % chance to get that many good units with nothing but 0$ pulls. Let's face it, while it IS possible to just daily roll and spend 0$ on BE, odds are you won't walk away with all of those above units just on shear daily luck and free tickets. It's easy to just say "Oh that guy has lunneth/lightning/noctis/gilgamesh, fuck him he's so lucky and I don't have any of them" but you also have to weigh the effort it took to get all those characters. In BE specifically it's a matter of leveling out the end result of what you want (and what others might have) with what effort it took to GET that result. Put simply, I don't innately think that being jealous over someone else's digital data in a game is a bad thing, but only to a certain degree. Firion is a monster with lots of X Killer abilities, WoL bulks up and has -40% stat down abilities, Agrias who's nothing more than a 5* Full Breaker now becomes a mini Orlandu at 6* + Enhancements.īit late to chime in and all these fags are probably gone, but let me add my two cents because this whole "jealousy over a video game" thing is a topic I've argued in the past (mainly in MMORPGs) and this is triggering my autism. Otherwise, there's plenty of units down the line that aren't 5* bases that make great 6* units or other units that aren't 6* now may have 6* upgrades later. If you aren't too far in, start over and try to get a start you're satisfied with. With three of the best units in the game, there was really no pressure to have to get other units, and I can draw or pass on banners at my leisure. Got Luneth and Cecil at the start, and eventually Refia. I started playing during the Halloween event, but rerolled after two weeks when the III banner started. If just having a single 5* base is enough to satisfy you, you wont have to feel anxious down the line. If you really want Noctis, start new accounts and reroll for him, using the starting Lapis/Tickets to pull for him. You get an increase chance to pull specific ones during the banner, so you feel the pressure of "oh shit it's now or never" when it ends, your chance (which was already dogshit) just got even WORSE. I think my problem with this whole 5* base rainbow crystal shit is in the concept of banners. Lightning banner is about over and I didn't get jack shit. I won't spend a dime on it either just like you haven't, but it's fucking annoying.įor what it's worth I have no "luck" for this type of shit, and I don't really believe in luck to begin with (contradictory I know, it's just RNG) but I haven't pulled anything with my daily worth mentioning other than a Zidane for TMR farm when I get more. Think about it, when the banner ends you have even LESS of a chance to get the character you wanted, it's literally adding pressure to try to make you pay up. It's a "you don't have to pay if you don't want to.BUT IF YOU DO." And I can't increase the font on those 4 words enough. There's a difference in curving "RNG" between someone doing 1 pull a day and someone doing 200 pulls in one day because they dropped their paycheck in a mobile game, however. >FF XI /ffg/ has a linkshell on Asura: "FearTheVoid"!
